6 killed in Juarez over the weekend; 602 so far in 2012

Six people were killed in Juarez during the weekend and there have been a total of 21 murders since the beginning of August. In August alone, there were 7 murders.  The article contains a summary of the murder statistics for the year 2012. By this count, there have been a total of 602 people killed so far this year in Juarez. This comes to an average of 2.6 people per day.  This is definitely an improvement over recent years and it is also twice the tally for any complete year since 2007. There is also an article on the massacre of 7 people last night at a bar in the middle of the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.  molly
January–118 homicides, 12 of these were women, 2 minors, 8 police and 2 other officials among the victims.

Todos Somos Juarez spokesman says fewer people killed in Juarez than in New Orleans…fact check??

In the Diario article, quoting Arturo Valenzuela:
Dijo que las cosas en esta frontera ha mejorado dramáticamente al grado de presentar cifras de incidencia delictiva por debajo de Nueva Orleáns, donde hubo un registro mensual de 50 muertos.

He said that in this border city the rate of crime has dramatically improved that the crime numbers are now below those of New Orleans where there was a monthly tally of 50 deaths…

I checked the current crime stats from New Orleans that indicates there have been 109 murders so far this year–that is current as of today, July 21.  It is likely the highest murder rate in a US city.  New Orleans only has about 350,000 people.  That would be a murder rate of about 31 per 100,000.

But the Diario article goes on to say that there have been 19 murders in Juarez so far in July, and that would not count at least 2 killed on Thursday, one yesterday and one today (Saturday).  By my tally, there were 540 murders in Juarez as of June 30, so now we can say there are at least 560+.  That would calculate to a murder rate of 46 based on a Juarez population of 1.2 million.

At the link, you can check the numbers of murders in New Orleans for the year.
I have been collecting the stories on Juarez murders, though I’ve not posted them. It looks like between one and two people per day have been victims of homicide in Juarez so far in July. Certainly an improvement over recent years.  But the annual tally so far just past mid-year is nearly twice what it was in 2007.

107 (or 106?) victims in April; 18 women…total for the year is between 411 and 416

El Diario reports 106 homicides for the month of April.  They also report 2
murders yesterday.  Another story posted shortly after midnight says that
another victim injured in an attack late last night had died in the
hospital.  I’m going to guess the toll is actually 107.

For the statistics, a higher percentage of the victims in April were
women–18; this comes to about 17 percent of the total–higher than in most
of the years since 1993. The total number of female victims for the year so
far: Jan 12; Feb 10; Mar 15; Apr 18 for a total of 55. Overall for the
year, the percent of victims who are women is between 13 and 14 percent of
the total.
Diario reports a total for the year of 411 dead.  They have a lower tally
for January than mine.  I think the total is closer to 416:
Jan 122; Feb 82; Mar 105; Apr 107

The total number of homicide victims in Juarez since January 2008 is now at
least 10,500.

8 killed Saturday; 99 in April; 408 for the year

*At least 8 people were murdered in Juarez on Saturday. In one incident, 9
young people were shot and at least 4 of them died. The reports said that 5
more were gravely injured but I’ve not seen another report on the number of
dead. A policeman was shot together with several members of his family. If
he was the target he apparently survived, but his brother-in-law died.  I
believe there were just 2 killed yesterday (Sunday) though I’ve not seen a
summary article. My updated tally is 99 for the month of April (as of April
29); 408 for the year 2012 and since 2008, about 10,493.  The average
murders per day in 2012 is about 3.4. Going back to 2008, at least 6.6
people per day have been victims of homicide, just in the city of Juarez.

8 killed yesterday April 24 in Juarez; 83 so far in April; 392 for the year

Eight people were murdered yesterday in Juarez, including 3 men and a woman
shot to death in an open area outside of the city just off the Pan American
highway near the San Rafael cemetery.  The article says that one young
woman who survived the attack came out to the highway and signaled drivers
for help.  None of the victims in this multiple homicide are named in the
article. Also, another victim of a shooting on Monday died in the hospital.
I will add 9 people to the tally from yesterday, bringing the April number
to 83 and for the year 2012, at least 392. molly

82 killed in February in Juarez; lowest in 34 months; 204 for year; 10,289 since 2008

FEBRUARY ended with official count of 82 homicides. Lowest in 34 months. The article mentions the remains of 12 people found in graves in the Valle de Juarez, but it is unclear to me if these dead are included in the 82 homicides for February. I do not believe they are counted. Most of the stories said that these were all women’s bodies and that the article states that the number of women killed in February is 10.

This article says the number killed in January was 118, but I had recorded 122 from my tally. Adding the 82 for Feb, the total for 2012 is now 204. The average number of people per day killed for this year is 3.4.

This is my unofficial tally for the homicide deaths in Juarez since 2008:

2008 = 1,623

2009 = 2,754

2010 = 3,622

2011 = 2,086

2012 = 204 (as of February 29) – a total of 10,289 victims of homicide

According to El Diario, 5 people were murdered on March 1. The dead included a municipal policeman and a woman and her 13 yr old son son shot to death inside their home. Another boy was injured in the attack, but survived. Neighbors said they heard gunfire around 1:00 in the morning, but the bodies were not discovered until after 4 pm in the afternoon. Another man was shot to death and another found dead in the trunk of a car. That story is also posted below.

Juárez homicides Feb 7-12

To provide an update on the homicides in February for the past several
days, from looking at the daily stories in El Diario, there have been
a total of about 35 violent deaths as of Sunday February 12. As of
yesterday, about 157 people had been killed so far in 2012, an average
of 3.6 people per day. On Feb 7, there were no murders, but one death
was reported of a man who had been wounded in a shooting and died on
that day. Wed Feb 8, there were 5 homicides; Thurs Feb 9 and Fri Feb
10–there were 3 each day. One of the victims Friday was a young
pregnant woman who was shot to death. On Sat and Sun, Feb 11 and 12,
two people were killed each day. The deaths on Saturday were 2
separate incidents of the victims being run over by vehicles. One man
was intentionally run over by a municipal police car on Avenida Juarez
where he worked as a parking attendant and car washer. Relatives
protested the brutality of the killing at the Fiscalia. As of this
morning, Diario reports that the policeman who killed the man and then
fled the scene has been arrested:
